Undergraduate Degree in Learning and Instructional Sciences

Research and studies in the Department of Learning and Instructional Sciences are anchored in an integrative approach of acquiring both academic-theoretical and practical knowledge of learning and teaching. The main areas of study and research in the Department are learning sciences, pedagogy and didactics, learning and instructional technologies, Philosophy of education, research methods in education, multicultural education, and higher-order thinking and meta-cognition in the disciplines.
Undergraduate studies in the Department focus on issues of teaching and learning with an emphasis on the connection between theory, research and practice. The students of the Department build knowledge in teaching their discipline and field of knowledge along with an interdisciplinary vision of teaching and learning processes, planning and design of learning environments, and personal and professional development as educators. They create in-depth and comprehensive knowledge in areas that form the basis of everyone who deals with education, such as the psychological, philosophical, pedagogical and sociological aspects of education.
General Admission Requirements:
1. Complete Matriculation Certificate/ high school diploma or an equivalent recognized by the Israeli Ministry of Education or by the Registration Department.
2. Psychometric Entrance Examination/ SAT or ACT.
3. Knowledge of English– The level of English is determined within the framework of the Psychometric Entrance Examination, the English Placement Tests (AMIR /AMIRAM) or SAT, TOFEL, IELTS, ECRL tests.
The minimum level of English required for admission to the university is Basic (a score of at least 85). Certain departments require a higher level of English.
4. Knowledge of Hebrew – Applicants who took the Psychometric Entrance Examination in a language other than Hebrew and graduated from high schools where the language of instruction was not Hebrew, must prove satisfactory knowledge of Hebrew before the beginning of the academic year by passing a Hebrew Proficiency Test (YAEL/ YAELNET/ Hebrew classification test of the University of Haifa* ). The score required for admission to the University of Haifa is a score of at least 120 on the YAEL/ YAELNET/ Hebrew classification tests.
Applicants whose scores on the YAEL/ YAELNET/Hebrew classification tests range from 90-119 and their Psychometric score was at least 500 will be conditionally admitted and will have to pass the Hebrew Proficiency Test at the required score by the end of the first year of their studies. These students also have the option of studying a Hebrew literacy course within the framework of the University of Haifa preparatory program (Mechina) . Those who meet the course requirements and their final score in the course will be 85 and above will be exempt from the Hebrew condition.
Please note that certain departments require a higher level of Hebrew and that some departments do not approve admission with a Hebrew condition.
*The Hebrew classification test and Hebrew literacy course is valid at the University of Haifa only.
5.Departmental Entrance Examinations/Special admissions requirements– Certain departments require applicants to take a departmental Entrance Examinations and/or attend an interview or meet other departmental requirements.

In addition to the general university admission requirements, the candidate must meet individual departmental admission requirements.
Track A: Matriculation certificate and psychometric test
- A full matriculation certificate and a psychometric test with an agreement mark of at least 580 (for calculating an agreement).
- Admission interview (group workshop).
- Score over 120 in the Hebrew language test. The exam is intended for candidates whose teaching language in their high school was not Hebrew and did not take the psychometric test in the Hebrew language. The University of Haifa allows its candidates to take a Hebrew exam to classify their proficiency.
- Candidates, whose psychometric score is 500 or higher, and their Yael / classification test score between 90 and 119, will be accepted on probation of first year. These candidates will need to:
- Pass during the first year a Yael / classification test with a score of 120 or higher, or
- To study a Hebrew literacy course offered at the University of Haifa during the first year, and to successfully complete the course.
- Join the “Imtiaz-excellence” course for support of second language speakers.
Track B: Departmental test interview for candidates with a matriculation certificate but without a psychometric grade.
The conditions for candidates without psychometric grade and with a full matriculation certificate (and / or matriculation equivalent) are:
- Matriculation average 100 and above. Preference will be given to those with previous educational experience. Those with proven educational experience – will be able to apply, even if they do not meet the threshold conditions of the matriculation average (see track C).
- Departmental test interview. An applicant who passes the test-interview will be accepted as a full-time student.
- Classification test in Hebrew: Yael examination or classification examination of the University of Haifa with a grade of 120 or higher (the examination is intended for candidates whose teaching language in high school was not Hebrew and did not pass the psychometric test in the Hebrew language, and did not take the Yael or Yael Net exam).
- Amir or Amiram English Classification Test.
Track C: Pre-study track for acceptance to Bachelor’s degree
A candidate without a psychometric test and with a matriculation average of less than 100, but with an educational experience, will be able to apply for admission to the “Studies in candidacy to a Bachelor’s Degree in Learning and Teaching Sciences” track.
Admission requirements for this Track are:
- Matriculation average below 100.
- Circuit test interview.
- Classification test in Hebrew: Yael examination or classification examination of the University of Haifa with a grade of 120 or higher (the examination is intended for candidates whose teaching language in high school was not Hebrew and did not pass the psychometric test in the Hebrew language, and did not take the Yael or Yael Net exam).
- Amir or Amiram English Classification Test.
An applicant, who will be accepted for this track, will be required to study two pre-courses from the following courses in the second semester of 2022:
- Introduction to the Philosophy of Education.
- Introduction to the Psychology of Education.
- Introduction to Learning Environments Design.
Upon the completion of the two pre-courses with a grade of at least 80, candidates will be able to be accepted as a full-time student in undergraduate studies in the first semester. The above courses will form part of the course quota of the degree.
Track D: Candidates who have completed their first year studies at the University of Haifa (in one of the disciplines below*)
- Completed at least 18 credits in the disciplinary department
- Achieved an average grade in the first year greater than 90
- Successfully passed a departmental test interview
* Disciplines: Bible, Political Science, Creative Arts, Geography and Environmental Studies, General History, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, Israeli Studies, Hebrew Language, Music, Hebrew and Comparative Literature, English Language and Literature, Arabic Language and Literature, History of Art, History of Israel, Theater.
Track E: Graduates of the Haifa University Preparatory School
- For graduates of a preparatory course at the University of Haifa, a grade point average of at least 85 and a class test interview are required.
- For graduates of a 30+ preparatory course, admission is without a psychometric test, if the candidate meets all of the following conditions:
- Average grade first year in humanities / social studies: 80 and over.
- Compliance with the Hebrew conditions of a grade in the Yael test / classification of the University of Haifa greater than 120 (125 for students of the Hebrew language) and with English conditions at the first-level level.
The Department will consider the application in the departmental admissions committee.
Track F: Transition channel between the Open University of Israel and the University of Haifa
The transition channel allows students to begin their undergraduate studies at the Open University, and after studying a series of courses and meeting the English and Hebrew requirements, to move to the Department of Learning and Instructional Sciences at the University of Haifa. Bachelor’s degree in Learning and Instructional Sciences and teaching certificate in the discipline studied as the second major.
The program is designed for students in a dual-subject track, whose second major is a field of study taught in the post-primary school. The program allows for the receipt of a teaching certificate in a particular field of knowledge. A student studying in the program will acquire in-depth and comprehensive knowledge in areas that form the basis of every practitioner involved in education, such as psychological, philosophical and sociological aspects of education, and general fields of learning and teaching. In addition, the student will receive theoretical and practical training for teaching in a specific discipline, which gives him a teaching certificate in the field of knowledge, which he is studying as his second department.
Duration of studies: three years
Disciplines and departments whose students can apply for a teaching certificate**:
Bible, Civics (political science and law), art (creative arts and art history), English, Geography, History (Israeli history, general history, Middle Eastern and Islamic studies, and Israeli studies), Hebrew language, Music, Literature (Hebrew and comparative literature), Arabic as a first language, and Theater.
** The opening of certificate rack in each of the disciplines depends on a minimal number of students admitted studying this subject.
Graduates can work in the fields of education, teaching, etc.
