The Department of Sociology at the University of Haifa has become the focus of theoretical innovation undertaking research positioned at the forefront of the sociological scientific communities. Utilizing theoretical conceptualizations and advanced research methods, our faculty aims to provide responses to key questions pertaining to the social world, the way in which it is organized and the principles constituting everyday social life. Students at our department learn to methodically examine human society in order to identify general patterns in the behavior of individuals, groups and institutions and the relations between them.
Students can register for the Bachelor’s Degree in Two Years program (including a summer semester).
Scholarships may be awarded to students with psychometrics of at least 600*.

General Admission Requirements:
1. Complete Matriculation Certificate/ high school diploma or an equivalent recognized by the Israeli Ministry of Education or by the Registration Department.
2. Psychometric Entrance Examination/ SAT or ACT.
3.Knowledge of English– The level of English is determined within the framework of the Psychometric Entrance Examination, the English Placement Tests (AMIR /AMIRAM) or SAT, TOFEL, IELTS, ECRL tests.
The minimum level of English required for admission to the university is Basic (a score of at least 85). Certain departments require a higher level of English.
4. Knowledge of Hebrew – Applicants who took the Psychometric Entrance Examination in a language other than Hebrew and graduated from high schools where the language of instruction was not Hebrew, must prove satisfactory knowledge of Hebrew before the beginning of the academic year by passing a Hebrew Proficiency Test (YAEL/ YAELNET/ Hebrew classification test of the University of Haifa* ). The score required for admission to the University of Haifa is a score of at least 120 on the YAEL/ YAELNET/ Hebrew classification tests.
Applicants whose scores on the YAEL/ YAELNET/Hebrew classification tests range from 90-119 and their Psychometric score was at least 500 will be conditionally admitted and will have to pass the Hebrew Proficiency Test at the required score by the end of the first year of their studies. These students also have the option of studying a Hebrew literacy course within the framework of the University of Haifa preparatory program (Mechina) . Those who meet the course requirements and their final score in the course will be 85 and above will be exempt from the Hebrew condition.
Please note that certain departments require a higher level of Hebrew and that some departments do not approve admission with a Hebrew condition.
*The Hebrew classification test and Hebrew literacy course is valid at the University of Haifa only.
5.Departmental Entrance Examinations/Special admissions requirements– Certain departments require applicants to take a departmental Entrance Examinations and/or attend an interview or meet other departmental requirements.

In addition, the candidate must meet the Departmental Admission requirements, and they are as follows:
Admissions for the regular three-year bachelor’s degree program:
- Psychometric (1:3) weighted score of 540 for day studies, or a weighted score of 500 for evening studies.
- Ya’el with a grade of at least 110.
Admissions for the two-year bachelor’s degree program:
- Total 540
- English at a “basic” level at least
- Ya’el 120 at least

Moreover, it is possible to acquire admission to studies without the psychometric exam prerequisites.
Admission conditions without a psychometric exam/score, for holders of a matriculation certificate** (subject to compliance with the General University admission conditions), are as follows:
- Having a matriculation (Bagrut) with an average of at least 90, and a score of 85 in 4 units in English, or a score 80 in 5 units in English.
- Required level of Hebrew – at least a Ya’el exam of 110 or an equivalent university exam, or a successful completion of a university literacy course (conditional admission)
Admission to the Pre-Bachelor degree track will be possible – for candidates who:
- Completed a matriculation (Bagrut) with an average of at least 90.
- Acquired a level of Hebrew – a Ya’el exam grade of at least 110 or an equivalent university exam, or successful completion of a university literacy course (conditional admission).
- For admission to the Single-Major track, the student must study 3 compulsory courses of the first year:
- Introduction to Sociology (4 credits, 51 passing grade)
- Fundamentals of social research (4 credit points, 51 passing grade)
- Statistics for Sociologists A (4 credits, 51 passing grade)
- For admission to a Double-Major track, the student must study 2 compulsory courses of the first year:
- Introduction to Sociology (4 credits, 51 passing grade)
- Fundamentals of social research (4 credit points, 51 passing grade)
- Failure in one of the courses will not allow further admission to the degree studies.
- If the candidate meets the required grades in the pre-bachelor track, they will be admitted to the regular bachelor’s degree in the following semester. The courses they studied will be recognized as part of the degree studies’ obligations.

Graduate students of the Department of Sociology can engage in a variety of fields and positions that require knowledge and a foundation in the social sciences. Positions in organizations, such as: state institutions, public institutions, social institutions either for-profit or non-profit institutions, the higher-education institutions, etc. In addition, graduates of the department will be able to integrate in the field of teaching, either in the formal or informal education.
