Ph.D. Study Departments
Ph.D in Jewish History
Studies in the Department of Jewish History combine both Jewish History and Jewish Philosophy. This unique combination allows the department to offer flexible, varied, and innovative programs on Jewish history and Jewish philosophy from biblical times to the present.
Through their study of Jewish history, students will also learn about many varied faces of human culture. Jewish history cannot be separated from the history, culture, society, and religion of the nations in whose midst Jews lived, nor can we fully understand the history of these nations without examining how Jews contributed to these cultures and epochs.
The Ph.D. program consists of two stages:
Stage I—Must not exceed one year from the semester the student was accepted to the track including the semester /summer break.
Stage II—Must not exceed 3 years. When an applicant has met the acceptance requirements and been accepted to the department and an approved faculty member has agreed to serve as their doctoral supervisor, they can commence Research Stage I: Preparing a detailed research proposal. The research proposal must be submitted to the Departmental Doctoral Committee. When the student’s proposal has been approved by the Graduate Studies Authority, the student will receive the status of a Stage II research student. All Ph.D. students are required to take a certain number of courses at the discretion of their Doctoral Supervisor and the Doctoral Committee. Students are required to learn a foreign language related to their field of research. On completing their dissertation, the students will submit a printed copy signed by the supervisor/s to the Departmental Doctoral Committee. After checking that the student has indeed met all the criteria of the Ph.D. regulations, dissertation evaluators will be appointed in accordance with the Ph.D. regulations.
